The Short Version

Amazon’s financial disclosures directly contradict both parts of the statement. AWS contributes roughly 18% of consolidated net sales, far below a majority, and Amazon’s North American operations and online-store sales are substantially larger. AWS is highly profitable and growing rapidly, but neither fact makes it Amazon’s largest business by sales.

Caveats

  • Revenue should not be confused with operating income, where AWS contributes a much larger share.
  • Rapid growth rates and annualized run rates do not establish current majority revenue.
