Pressing 1 can connect a victim to a scammer or trigger another telecom step; it does not, by itself, let criminals instantly empty a bank account. Account losses typically happen only after additional actions such as revealing passwords, one-time codes, card details, or authorizing transfers.

Caveats

  • The key omission is that account takeover usually requires later social engineering or credential theft, not just a keypad press.
  • The phrase “within seconds” is not supported by the strongest sources and exaggerates the speed of loss from the keypress itself.
  • Claims tying this specifically to calls from a mobile network operator are weaker than the broader evidence, which more commonly involves bank or card-company impersonation.
