The Claim

Doritos tortilla chips are sprayed with the food colorings Sunset Yellow FCF (E110/Yellow 6) and Allura Red AC (E129/Red 40), and foods containing these colorings require warning labels in the European Union.

The Short Version

The regulatory part is well supported: in the EU, foods containing E110 or E129 must carry a warning label. Doritos evidence is also substantial, but mainly for certain non-EU formulations, especially U.S. products, where those dyes appear in the seasoning. The claim becomes misleading if read as saying Doritos sold in the EU contain these dyes or would need that warning.

Caveats

  • Doritos formulations vary by country; EU-market Doritos are often reformulated to avoid E110 and E129.
  • “Sprayed with” is imprecise shorthand for dyes being present in the seasoning applied to the chips, not proof of a single universal manufacturing step.
  • The claim links Doritos and EU warning rules in a way that may imply EU-sold Doritos carry these dyes, which is not generally the case.
