Human studies have not established that cannabis consistently lowers estrogen levels.

The Claim

Cannabis lowers estrogen levels in women.

The Short Version

Available evidence does not establish that cannabis lowers estrogen levels in women. Although preclinical research suggests cannabinoids could disrupt hormone-regulating pathways, direct human evidence is limited and has generally not shown a consistent reduction in estradiol. The claim turns a plausible mechanism into an unqualified causal effect that clinical research has not demonstrated.

Caveats

  • Mechanistic findings and animal experiments cannot by themselves establish reduced estrogen in women.
  • Effects may differ by THC or CBD content, dose, frequency, exposure duration, and menstrual-cycle phase.
  • Research on chronic cannabis use and female reproductive hormones remains limited.
