Moderate caffeine intake has not been shown to cause miscarriage.

The Claim

Coffee consumption causes miscarriage.

The Short Version

Coffee has not been established as a cause of miscarriage. Moderate caffeine intake—generally under 200 mg per day—has not been shown to raise miscarriage risk, while some observational studies associate higher intake with greater pregnancy-loss risk. Those studies cannot reliably separate caffeine’s effect from other factors and therefore do not prove causation.

Caveats

  • Associations observed at high caffeine intake do not by themselves establish causation.
  • The claim ignores dose: clinical guidance generally permits up to 200 mg of caffeine daily during pregnancy.
  • Coffee’s caffeine content varies considerably by beverage type, serving size, and preparation method.
