Cold exposure directly causes hypothermia and increases several other health risks.

The Claim

Cold weather does not cause illness.

The Short Version

The statement is too broad to be accurate. Cold weather does not itself create viral infections such as the common cold, but cold exposure can directly cause hypothermia and other cold-related conditions and can increase susceptibility to respiratory and cardiovascular problems. The valid distinction between cold temperatures and viral pathogens applies only to infectious illnesses, not illness generally.

Caveats

  • Viruses, rather than cold temperature alone, cause common colds and influenza.
  • Evidence of increased infection risk does not always establish that cold directly caused an infection.
  • The unqualified word “illness” wrongly extends a narrow point about viral infections to all health conditions.
