The Claim

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has anti-inflammatory effects in humans.

The Short Version

Evidence supports that DMSO can reduce inflammatory markers in human-derived systems and has some human clinical evidence consistent with anti-inflammatory activity. The main limitation is that the strongest support comes from ex vivo and mechanistic studies, while clinical trials are smaller, mixed, and condition-specific. So the general claim is supported, but it overstates how firmly clinical benefit has been established in living patients.

Caveats

  • Do not equate ex vivo human blood or cell studies with proven anti-inflammatory treatment efficacy in patients.
  • Clinical evidence is limited by small studies, mixed results, and concentration- and route-specific effects.
  • DMSO can cause adverse effects and should not be treated as a broadly validated anti-inflammatory therapy for all conditions.
