The Claim

Having a normal semen analysis is necessary but not sufficient for male fertility.

The Short Version

The evidence does not support the claim as stated. A normal semen analysis does not guarantee male fertility, but it is also not required for fertility: men with abnormal semen parameters can still achieve pregnancy. Major medical guidance treats semen analysis as a useful screening tool with limited predictive power, not as a necessary condition for conception.

Caveats

  • The word “necessary” is the key error: abnormal semen results do not automatically mean a man is infertile.
  • Semen analysis is a screening and evaluation tool, not a definitive measure of a man's ability to cause pregnancy.
  • Reference ranges describe populations and probabilities; they are not absolute fertility cutoffs.
