The Claim

Lat pulldowns are superior to lat prayers for lat hypertrophy.

The Short Version

The available evidence does not show that lat pulldowns generally build more lat muscle than lat prayers. Most of the cited research measures EMG or biomechanics rather than actual hypertrophy, and those proxy findings do not cleanly favor pulldowns. Lat pulldowns may have practical advantages for loading and stability, but the claim overstates what the evidence supports.

Caveats

  • EMG and leverage arguments are not the same as measured muscle-growth outcomes.
  • The claim is too broad: no direct trial here shows pulldowns outperform lat prayers for lat hypertrophy across lifters or programs.
  • Several supporting arguments rely on coach preference or social media explanations rather than independent comparative research.
