Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans cause cancer.

The Short Version

Available evidence does not support MRI scans as a cause of cancer. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI uses non-ionizing magnetic and radiofrequency fields rather than DNA-damaging ionizing radiation, and no cancer increase from ordinary clinical MRI has been established. MRI has other recognized safety considerations, but they do not substantiate this cancer claim.

Caveats

  • Do not confuse MRI with X-rays, CT scans, or some nuclear imaging procedures, which use ionizing radiation.
  • MRI can cause heating and presents risks involving metal objects, implants, noise, and confined spaces, but these are not evidence of cancer causation.
  • Gadolinium contrast agents have separate safety concerns, especially in certain patients, but available evidence does not establish that routine MRI contrast causes cancer.
