Stronger historical and culinary sources generally trace sarapatel/sorpotel to Portugal and indicate that it was carried to Brazil, where it was adapted under colonial conditions. Enslaved Africans likely played an important role in transforming or popularizing the dish in Brazil, but the record does not firmly support saying they originated it there in the 16th century.

Caveats

  • The claim conflates adaptation in colonial Brazil with original invention; those are not the same historical proposition.
  • Key support for the plantation-origin story comes from low-accountability retellings, while more reliable reference sources point to Portuguese antecedents.
