The evidence supports 1984 as the first post-independence or first modern nationwide census, not the first official national census ever held in the territory. High-authority historical sources report an earlier national census in 1955–1957 under Belgian colonial administration. As written, the claim omits that earlier census and overstates 1984’s precedence.

Caveats

  • Many recent articles use “first census” as shorthand for the first since independence or the first modern/scientific census, which is not the same as the first ever national census.
  • A colonial-era national census in 1955–1957 materially changes the claim’s meaning; leaving it out makes the statement misleading.
  • At least one cited source appears to concern the Republic of the Congo rather than the Democratic Republic of the Congo and should not be used for this claim.
