HISTORY

The Claim

The dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia resulted in the creation of new states including Serbia, Slovenia, and North Macedonia.

The Short Version

The claim is broadly accurate, but it compresses an important sequence. Slovenia and North Macedonia became independent states directly from Yugoslavia’s breakup in 1991, while Serbia reached separate independence later, in 2006, after first existing within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and then Serbia and Montenegro. The overall claim is right about the breakup producing these successor states, but Serbia’s path was less direct.

Caveats

  • Serbia was not created as a separately independent state in the same immediate way as Slovenia and North Macedonia; its independence came through later state succession.
  • The phrase "creation of new states" is slightly imprecise because it treats all listed countries as emerging through the same timeline and mechanism.
  • Low-authority social-media and forum sources in the evidence set should not be relied on when higher-authority official and reference sources already establish the history.
