HISTORY

The Claim

The Sandinista revolutionary process in Nicaragua began in 1961 with the founding of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional).

The Short Version

The evidence largely supports dating the Sandinista movement’s origin to 1961, when the organization that became the FSLN was founded. The main caveat is that the “Sandinista” name appears to have been adopted slightly later, and some scholars distinguish the 1961 organizational founding from the later revolutionary phase. Even so, 1961 is a defensible and common starting point.

Caveats

  • Some academic sources indicate the organization began in 1961 as the FLN, with the full “Sandinista” name adopted in 1962-1963.
  • Historians do not all use “revolutionary process” the same way; some date that more specifically to the late 1960s and 1970s rather than the founding year.
  • Commemorative social-media and partisan sources echo the 1961 date but are weaker evidence than Britannica, university, and scholarly publications.
