The claim misstates the basic medical issue. The historical and modern evidence points to urinary retention and related complications, not constipation or inability to defecate. Some accounts do link Brahe’s death to not urinating, but even that is not a simple confirmed “held it too long” story; newer analyses suggest deeper prostate or metabolic disease may have caused the retention.

Caveats

  • Do not treat constipation and urinary retention as interchangeable; the sources distinguish bowel problems from inability to urinate.
  • The popular story that Brahe died because he politely refused to urinate at a banquet is partly legendary and oversimplifies the medical evidence.
  • Modern analyses suggest an underlying condition such as prostate disease, obesity, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome, so the proximate symptom should not be confused with the full cause of death.
