Trump’s conduct was a central cause of the January 6 insurrection.

The Claim

Donald Trump started the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol, which constituted an insurrection.

The Short Version

The evidence supports Trump as a central cause of the January 6 attack, which official investigations and courts have characterized as an insurrection. His election-fraud campaign, mobilization of supporters, direction toward the Capitol, and delayed response form the core causal case. However, “started” should not be read as proving that he personally initiated the breach or explicitly ordered violence.

Caveats

  • “Started” describes broad causation, not proof that Trump personally initiated the Capitol breach or explicitly ordered violence.
  • The Supreme Court’s Trump v. Anderson decision did not independently adjudicate whether Trump engaged in insurrection.
  • Trump was not convicted of incitement of insurrection; indictments and congressional findings are not equivalent to such a conviction.
