The Claim

The United States Small Business Administration publishes a public, searchable list of Paycheck Protection Program loan recipients.

The Short Version

The SBA did publicly release PPP loan-level recipient data, but the evidence does not support the stronger claim that the SBA itself published a public searchable recipient list. SBA sources point to downloadable data files, while widely used searchable lookups were built by third parties from that data. The claim therefore gets the source of the searchable interface wrong.

Caveats

  • Publicly releasing bulk data is not the same as hosting an SBA-run searchable recipient database.
  • Third-party searchable PPP databases may be accurate derivatives of SBA data, but they should not be described as SBA-published search tools.
  • The claim omits an important distinction between downloadable CSV reports and an on-site interactive search interface.
