The Claim

A shallow-cut diamond appears brighter than a deep-cut diamond because some light reflects off the table facet and returns to the viewer even though other light leaks out through the bottom.

The Short Version

The evidence does not support the claim that shallow-cut diamonds generally appear brighter than deep-cut diamonds. Reliable gemology sources say both overly shallow and overly deep cuts lose light and tend to look dull, dark, or glassy compared with well-cut stones. The claim also confuses table-surface glare with true brilliance, which depends on efficient internal light return.

Caveats

  • Surface reflection from the table facet is not the same as overall brilliance or light return.
  • Both shallow and deep misproportioned cuts can leak significant light; the meaningful comparison is usually against ideal proportions, not against each other.
  • The claim provides no quantified geometry or viewing conditions under which shallow cuts would reliably look brighter than deep cuts.
