Melanesian blond hair evolved from a native TYRP1 variant.

The Claim

All people of non-European ancestry who have blond hair and blue eyes acquired those traits through gene flow from European ancestry.

The Short Version

Independent genetic evidence disproves a universal European origin for blond hair, but the presented research does not establish an exact non-European counterexample possessing both blond hair and blue eyes. Evidence that European-derived variants explain many instances cannot support the claim’s absolute “all” or exclude independent mutations and other pigmentation mechanisms. The proposed universal causal conclusion is therefore largely unsupported.

Caveats

  • The evidence on Solomon Islanders establishes independently evolved blond hair, not necessarily the combined blond-hair-and-blue-eyes phenotype.
  • Common European origins for particular pigmentation variants do not prove European ancestry in every individual with similar traits.
  • The absolute qualifier “all” requires comprehensive evidence excluding independent mutations and other pigmentation mechanisms.
