The Claim

Dinosaurs are birds and lizards.

The Short Version

The claim is not supported by modern taxonomy. Birds are living dinosaurs, but dinosaurs are not simply “birds,” because only one dinosaur lineage survives as birds. Dinosaurs are reptiles within Archosauria, whereas lizards belong to a different reptile branch, Squamata, so calling dinosaurs “lizards” is scientifically wrong.

Caveats

  • The statement reverses the real relationship: birds are a subset of dinosaurs, not the other way around.
  • “Lizards” is not interchangeable with “reptiles”; lizards are a separate branch from dinosaurs.
  • The wording compresses evolutionary relationships so much that it changes the meaning, not just the level of detail.
