The Claim

Eoraptor lunensis is not considered a close relative of Tyrannosaurus rex within theropod dinosaurs.

The Short Version

The evidence strongly indicates that Eoraptor was not a close relative of Tyrannosaurus rex. Recent phylogenetic work usually places Eoraptor outside Theropoda or at most very near its base, far from the derived tyrannosaur lineage. The only meaningful caveat is that the phrase "within theropod dinosaurs" is somewhat imprecise because Eoraptor may not have been a theropod at all.

Caveats

  • Some museum and reference summaries still label Eoraptor a theropod, but that does not make it closely related to T. rex.
  • The wording is slightly imprecise because current research often places Eoraptor outside Theropoda, as a basal sauropodomorph or basal saurischian.
  • The scientific debate concerns Eoraptor's exact placement, not whether it was a close tyrannosaur relative; on that point the sources are aligned.
