The Claim

Genetic factors explain more variation in human immune system traits than environmental factors do.

The Short Version

Available human studies point in the opposite direction: across immune traits overall, environmental and other non-heritable influences usually explain more variation than genetics. Genes do matter for many specific traits, and some subsets can be more heritable, but broad twin studies and reviews place average genetic influence below half and often much lower. The claim overstates and reverses the overall pattern.

Caveats

  • The claim overgeneralizes from specific highly heritable immune traits to the entire immune system.
  • Counting how many traits show heritability is not the same as showing genes explain most variance overall.
  • Results differ by trait class, tissue, age, infection history, and measurement method; narrow exceptions do not support the broad claim.
