The Short Version
The claim conflates IPTG-induced polymerase expression with a separate RNA byproduct mechanism. IPTG induces expression of T7 RNA polymerase in lac-controlled systems; the polymerase then transcribes targets from a T7 promoter. Purified T7 RNA polymerase can also generate complementary antisense RNA that forms double-stranded RNA during in vitro transcription, but this is conditional, aberrant activity. The evidence does not establish that IPTG induces bidirectional target transcription or the resulting double-stranded RNA production.
