HISTORY

The Claim

János Arany wrote the ballad "A walesi bárdok" in 1857.

The Short Version

The poem is widely dated to 1857 in editions and teaching materials, so the claim matches the standard shorthand. But the better scholarly caution is that 1857 is not directly proven as the full composition date: the poem may have been started in 1857 and finished or revised later, possibly around 1861. Stating 1857 as settled fact overstates the certainty.

Caveats

  • Many reliable editions print the poem as “1857” or “1857 June,” but that may reflect conventional dating rather than firm documentary proof.
  • Some scholarship distinguishes between beginning the poem in 1857 and completing or revising it later, which is materially different from saying it was simply written in 1857.
  • Low-authority summaries often repeat the 1857 date without noting the underlying scholarly uncertainty.
