Lebanon’s main Catholic communities existed long before France governed the country. Maronites were formally associated with Rome by the medieval period, and the Melkite Catholic Church emerged in 1724; French Mandate rule began only after World War I. France later protected and favored some Catholic institutions, but that influence did not cause most Lebanese Catholics to become Catholic.
