The Short Version

Albania’s Catholic population was established long before Italian occupation. Historical evidence traces Albanian Catholic communities back many centuries, especially in the north, while the Catholic population share remained near 10% before and during Italy’s 1939–1943 rule. Italian authorities supported missions and church institutions, but there is no evidence that most Albanian Catholics converted because of that rule.

Caveats

  • Official support for Catholic clergy and missions does not establish mass conversion.
  • The claim confuses Italy’s 1939–1943 occupation with the much older origins of Albanian Catholicism.
  • Historical population estimates and the 1942 census are not perfectly comparable, but neither indicates a large wartime conversion wave.
