Albanian lands were administered as Ottoman provinces rather than a separate colony.

The Claim

Albania was a colony of the Ottoman Empire.

The Short Version

Albanian lands were conquered and governed by the Ottoman Empire for centuries, but they were incorporated into its provincial system rather than formally administered as a separate colony. Calling Albania a “colony” is defensible only under a broad, contested conception of colonial domination. The historically standard description is that Albanian territories remained under Ottoman rule until independence in 1912.

Caveats

  • “Colony” can be used broadly for imperial subordination, but it is not the standard administrative classification here.
  • The modern Albanian state did not exist during most of the Ottoman period; multiple Albanian territories were governed in different provinces.
  • Several cited webpages and user-uploaded materials are weaker than the academic and governmental sources.
