Thailand was formerly a colony of the Khmer Empire.

The Short Version

The wording materially misrepresents the historical relationship. The Khmer Empire controlled, influenced, or received allegiance from substantial parts of what is now Thailand, but no unified Thai state then existed as a Khmer colony. “Colony” also imposes a later political category on varied medieval relationships involving direct rule, tributary ties, and vassalage.

Caveats

  • “Colony” is anachronistic and stronger than the evidence for medieval rule, suzerainty, or vassalage.
  • Present-day national borders and the name “Thailand” cannot be projected directly onto the Khmer period.
  • Statements that Thailand was “never colonized” usually concern modern European imperialism and do not negate earlier Khmer territorial control.
